Rohtang Pass

Distance from Property: 28km

A high mountain pass situated in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, around 51 kilometers (32 miles) from Manali in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It serves as a natural gateway to the remote Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

Rohtang Pass is famous for its breathtaking scenic beauty, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and valleys. The name “Rohtang” translates to “pile of corpses” in the local language, which is a grim reminder of the treacherous conditions that travelers used to face while crossing the pass in ancient times due to unpredictable weather and rugged terrain.

The pass remains covered in snow for much of the year, making it inaccessible during the winter months due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risks. It’s typically open to vehicular traffic from May to November, attracting tourists who come to witness its stunning landscapes, indulge in adventure activities like skiing and snowboarding, and explore the nearby attractions.

Rohtang Pass also holds strategic importance as it connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys, serving as a vital lifeline for the local communities and facilitating trade and transportation between different regions.
